Natural Design
Posted by John Gaffen on 20.06.07
GOING from behind a laboratory bench to behind a lens, a medical researcher turned photographer is blending both his interests in a new photography exhibition.

After a life-long career in science, John Gaffen from Lewisham answered his creative calling and decided to pursue photography.

He is currently studying photography with the Open College of the Arts and hopes to become professional. Using a SLR digital camera, he captures any subject to catch his eye in London and Kent (a selection can be viewed at white-windmill.co.uk) His display at Lewisham's Limelight Gallery, entitled Designs in Nature, focuses entirely on botanical wonders in and around south east London.

John said: "I am a biologist by training and this is reflected in my photographic interests, since many of my subjects - plants, animals and landscapes - are taken from the natural world.

"The theme of my exhibition is Natural Design. I have made a small photographic essay illustrating just a few of the common geometric forms to be found in nature.

"Other themes also taken from nature include symmetry and abstracts using, colour, form and function."
