Blurring the boundaries of design and architecture
Posted by LDF Administrator on 26.07.07

Materials Project (15-25 September)
The Materials Project matches leading architects and designers with public venues and materials manufacturers to create a series of epic installations, aiming to blur the boundaries between architecture, design, engineering, sculpture and fantasy.

The project will be one of the vanguards of the 2007 Festival programme, putting innovative design in front of a substantial audience, as well as pushing the limitations of the materials used.

Working with materials such as concrete and Corian, Zaha Hadid, Thomas Heatherwick, Amanda Levete and Barber Osgerby will each create a one-off piece to be placed externally along the South Bank. Later in the Festival these will be subject to a very special ‘walking auction’ by top auctioneers Phillips de Pury, but will likely remain in place for a month, providing visual spectacle to the thousands of tourists and commuters that pass by daily.
