BEARSPACE is delighted to present "If I was a sculptor (but then again, no)", an exhibition presenting five contemporary artists' responses to the tradition of relief sculpture. The exhibition takes a broad concept of 'relief sculpture', to include an array of wall-based sculptural objects. There is no painting or floor-based work. With different materials protruding from the walls, the exhibition will have a strongly physical aspect.

The artists here do not work within the art-historically dominant forms of painting and sculpture, rather their interests are more closely concerned with folk-art (wood carving, needlework) and/or utilitarian design (window display, shelving, signage). This type of art occupies a peculiar place, which shuns the fantasyland of pictorial illusion and monumental commemoration, in favour of the pleasure of base materials and daily ephemera.
